In the wake of graduating from an Bachelor of Music program (Boston University, 1963) and then observing the liberal arts experience as a teacher (Brown University, 1971-75) I'm an advocate of education that integrates study of the arts with study of many other subjects. So it's no surprise that an ethnomusicologist with a PhD and MA from UCLA is keen on the arts. There is no surprise that the department of ethnomusicology of UC Berkeley, where I was a professor from 1975-1976 is part of the college of letters and Science's Department of Music. Being able to explore multiple areas of interest is something that I truly love. It's a pleasure to instruct graduate and undergraduate students. I am the and the author of three volumes: Music in India: the Classical Traditions; Thinking Musically as well as Music in Japan, Experiencing Cultural Expression and Music. In between, I'll alternate between periods of primarily academic work and times of administrative tasks (I am Chair of Department of Music from 1983 to 1988, Dean of Undergraduate Advising from 1992 to 1998 and Chair of College of Letters and Science Deans 1994-98; Chair of the Group of Asian Studies since 1999 and now am back as Chair of Department of Music).
